The L1-A visa is an Intra-Company Visa which means that if you are employed by an affiliated company or branch of an American company as an executive or manager and they wish to transfer you to the United States, you can then apply for an L1-A visa. It is also open to those who want to start a business or develop one that is currently operating outside of the US.
The L1-A visa allows for the start up or growth of any enterprise within the US and after twelve months an L1-A visa holder may apply for a Green card but the success of this application relies on how well the business is doing. This means that, unlike other forms of Visa, the L1-A can provide a route to citizenship and permanent residency in the country providing the business creates employment. If opening a new office in America it is a stipulation of the L1-A that you must hire at least 3 full time US workers before the end of the first year.
The L1-A visa also extends to spouses and unmarried children under the age of 21 and spouses may apply for permission to work with the ability to work anywhere in the US providing that you remain under control of the initial company you applied with. After the initial period of a 1 year stay, the L1-A has to be renewed every 2 years with a maximum stay of 7 years.
There are no nationalities excluded from this visa, although some may require extra checks, and there are no specific education requirements providing that you direct the management or a vital function of the business you work for, making it a relatively inclusive visa that is ideal for anyone looking to get a foothold in the American market with their business.
