One of the first challenges an entrepreneur faces is creating a professional image on a shoestring. Companies like Champion Office Suites can provide fully staffed, business ready offices without requiring a long term commitment. From both his past in real estate and present as an entrepreneur, Roger Kahn understands start-up needs, and has made a successful business of satisfying them.
What services does your company provide?
Champion Office Suites provides office space to clients by the hour, the day, the week or the month. Within the office spaces comes phone, reception services, and video conferencing
How long did you start Champion Office Suites? What did you do before?
We have been in business for twelve years. Before I launched Champion Office Suites I owned a real estate consulting firm. Prior to that I worked for large corporations.
What made you want to leave the corporate world?
I wanted more freedom and more flexibility. I realized I could earn more money owning a company than I could working in Corporate America.
What convinced you that a virtual office would make a good business?
I started using a virtual office when I was in the real estate consulting business. At the time I was looking for an office and somebody to answer my phone; I did not want to spend a lot of money to get it done. I fell in love with the business; so when the business came up for sale I organized a group of investors to purchase it.
What made you think you were qualified to run a virtual office?
My background in real estate management was perfect training. My job then was to run big office space for big clients. My job was to keep them happy and to keep their needs serviced. Running a virtual office is a microcosm of that. Today instead of running a big office I am running an office suite. It is a mirror image of what I was doing in the corporate world.
What was the most challenging thing about transitioning from the corporate world to running your own business?
The biggest transition was dealing with freedom. This may sound weird, but it took me awhile to get over the guilt of not working 9:00 to 5:00 everyday. I slowly came to realize that some days I did not need to work until noon and that some days I did not need to work at all. I have always been a very structured with my time. Learning to be less structured and to delegate work to my staff gave me room to have a life.
What are your thoughts about your competition? How do you differentiate yourself?
My competition is formidable. My main competition is Regus, a very large corporation. I differentiate myself from them by the service I provide them. My clients can get me on the phone around the clock to quickly resolve any issues they might have. I am able to be attentive with details in way that a major corporation could not. My prices are also very competitive.
What do you enjoy most about working for yourself?
I have come to enjoy the freedom of that comes with being an entrepreneur. Beyond that, I enjoy the flexibility of making business decisions without worrying about the politics of working for somebody else. I also enjoy the fruits of my own labor; if I work harder and smarter I get to reap those benefits.
